Zumba® FAQ

What are the best shoes to wear in a Zumba® class?

Zumba Fitness® recommends that you wear “cross training” or “aerobic” style shoes. They provide the cushion and medial lateral support needed for side-to-side movements. They also have low traction rubber for easy sliding and turning. Please be careful with “running shoes” since they use a heavy tread on the bottom and are designed for forward movement. Dance sneakers are a good choice.

How many calories can I burn during a Zumba® class?

The number of calories each person burns per class varies. However, depending on your body parameters (type, composition, intensity, range of motion), you can burn hundreds of calories per class. TYpically, you’ll burn between 300-1000 calories.

Do I need to be a dancer to participate in a Zumba® class?

Not at all. Zumba® is designed for everyone, no dance or fitness experience necessary. The movements in our classes are simple and easy enough for beginners to follow, yet challenging enough for advanced participants.  If you get stuck on a step, remember to simply keep moving and as long as you are moving you’re doing well!  You’ll notice remarkable improvement with dance rhythm, coordination and endurance even after a few classes. Repetition is key to success, so attending class regularly will help you in mastering the steps and achieving long lasting results!

What is a typical Zumba® class like?

Zumba® is a one hour fitness class based on the principle of interval training – alternating high intensity and lower intensity exercise which works for both beginners and advanced exercisers. In Zumba®, changes in intensity are driven by the different rhythms of the music and the steps – without the negative effects of high impact aerobics.  We start with a warm up, then move through 8-10 routines which vary in intensity and style. We finish with a cool down and stretch to bring the heart rate down and relax the muscles.

What do I wear to Zumba® class?

Comfortable and lightweight athletic clothing that allows freedom of movement such as yoga pants with a tee or tank and a good sports bra. The clothing should be appropriate for exercise  and preferably fabrics that wick the moisture away from your body (e.g., coolmax or dri-fit).

Are all Zumba® classes the same?

All Zumba® classes will contain a mix (roughly 70/30) of latin and international rhythms.  Most of the songs used in class are recommended by the Zumba® network and are chosen by Beto.  However, you will find that no two Zumba® instructors and classes are exactly alike (by the way, make sure that your instructor is authorized to teach Zumba®, not an impostor!) We can choose our own music for the warm ups, cool downs and occasionally throw in a different song or rhythm into the mix. I change a couple of songs every few weeks, but the steps and rhythms remain similar, so it’s never boring, and not too difficult. I use the suggested Zumba® choreography for some of the routines and mix in my own steps as well, so it’s fun and interesting both for the instructor and the class.

What should I bring to class?

Bring bottled water and a towel if needed, burning 300-1000 calories can be pretty sweaty! A drinking fountain is available in our studio.

What age groups come to class?

All ages, all shapes and all sizes. Since Zumba® is a physical, fitness and aerobic activity anyone under the age of 18 needs parental approval. If your child is 4-12 years old, please enroll him/her in Zumbatomic®.

What is Zumbatomic®?

Zumbatomic® is a fitness program for kids. It’s a fast-forward fusion of the Zumba® program’s moves and high-octane workouts designed to let kids ages 4-12 max out on fun and fitness all at the same time. Safe and effective, kids can’t wait to get into the Zumbatomic® groove. Watch their energy and fitness levels soar as they get the groove.

What is Zumbathon®?

Zumbathon® is a Zumba® class often held for a special events ranging from charities, fundraisers, grand openings, celebrations and any excuse to just have fun!!

What is Zumba® Toning?

This is the original dance-fitness class taken to the next level.  Zumba® Toning is an innovative muscle training program with the addition of light weight toning sticks.  We provide the 1 1/2 lb, sand filled toning sticks, which are very similar to maracas.  In a relatively short period of time, this challenging workout helps in building coordination and muscle  endurance.   Now that you’ve worked on your lower body rhythm, its time to perfect the upper body!  The NEW and exciting Zumba® toning program is designed to offer the participant a safe, yet effective total body toning workout!  This class is open to everyone, no previous dance or Zumba® class experience necessary.
